the book gives, with very simple writing a complete insight to oil industry, including history, politics, technology and figures. very recommended
The content of this book is top notch. It goes through how oil is formed, where and how it is found, how refineries work and what the end products of oil are. Immersed in it all are a lot of historical information. It is easy reading despite the information content and never gets boring. But then again I am a physicist and thus a numbers guy. If I was just to judge the book based on its information content and writing style it would be 5 stars. It gives an overview of everything related to oil and enough information to ensure that the curious person will know how to dig for more information.
Unfortunately the kindle edition is very sloppy. There are lots of spelling errors, lots of weird symbols in places where they shouldn't and other small nuisances. It doesn't make the book unreadable but it is annoying. Due to this I lower the rating to 4 stars. I hope it will be fixed so all kindle owners can enjoy this important book fully.
Smil presents a well arranged data set, unemotionally debunking the magical thinking of peak oil advocates and demonstrating the many alternatives that can ease the inevitable transition away from oil.
I read the kindle edition, and unfortunately it seems to be yet another instance of brainless scanning without expending the minimal effort needed to proofread the work.
My rating is directed to the quality of the content and ignores the disgraceful laziness of the people responsible for the kindle version.
